Healthy Heroes Day with Young Focus: Empowering the Next Generation Through Education and Health
In the heart of Manila’s Smokey Mountain area, a community once built around the city’s former landfill, stands an organization that radiates hope…Young Focus. Every day, their team works tirelessly to improve the lives of underprivileged families and children who have dropped out of school, helping them find their way back to the classroom and toward a brighter future.
Young Focus believes that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty, and their mission goes far beyond academics. Through life skills training, mentorship, and social support, they empower over 1,000 children in Tondo to dream bigger, aim higher, and believe in their own potential.
At Avant Healthcare Professionals, we deeply share that belief. Since 2023, Avant has proudly supported Young Focus, recognizing the transformative power of education and the ripple effect it creates within communities.
Recently, our Global Impact team, together with our “Dream. Become. Inspire.” Nursing Scholars and Avant Nurses joined hands with Young Focus to host a special event: Healthy Heroes Day!
A Day of Fun, Learning, and Empowerment
Healthy Heroes Day was designed to promote hygiene awareness and literacy among children in the Tondo community. The event supported Young Focus’s StepUp Love2Learn program, which helps children who have dropped out of elementary school due to poverty, giving them the tools and confidence they need to re-enroll in school.
Through storytelling, interactive games, and hands-on learning, our goal was simple yet powerful: to help each child see themselves as a Healthy Hero capable of making positive choices for their health, education, and future.
Learning Through Play
Fifty-five bright and eager children spent the day exploring the many dimensions of wellness through hands-on activities that blended fun with purpose. They rotated through interactive stations, including a story station where they learned about the importance of health through an original story written by our volunteers, a hand-hygiene lesson led by an Avant nurse, literacy games, and a Healthy Hero nursing station where they used stethoscopes and discovered what it means to make a difference as a nurse.
Program Manager Angelo Elsisura shared, “We here at Young Focus had a great time with Avant, especially our learners! The day created a big impact with them in taking care of their health and sparking dreams to be healthcare workers in the future.”
For us at Avant, Healthy Heroes Day was more than just an event; it was a celebration of collaboration, purpose, and the promise of what’s possible when education and compassion come together.
