Daniel is originally from Taiwan. In this blog, he shares his story about becoming a USRN with Avant Healthcare Professionals. Daniel now has a successful career and life as a US-RN.

Introduction and Background:

Nursing wasn’t initially on my radar after high school. I was more interested in applied English, but one of my teachers opened my eyes to the global demand for nurses and the potential for a fulfilling healthcare career. Despite lacking a strong background in biology, I decided to dive into the nursing world, eager to see where the journey would take me.

Military Nursing Experience:

My service as a military nurse in a med-surg ward was a defining experience. While I had not yet chosen a specialty, it quickly became clear that critical care nursing was my true calling. The challenges of advanced disease processes, cutting-edge technology, and the need for rapid, decisive thinking were exhilarating. But more than that, I discovered that nursing is about the human connection—the empathy, the warmth, the touch. Patients may forget my name, but they will never forget the care I provided.

The Decision to Move:

I decided to move to the United States to further my nursing career during the COVID-19 pandemic. By then, I had five years of ICU nursing experience in Taiwan, but my desire to work in the U.S. had started much earlier. During a summer program at The Catholic University of America, I was introduced to the advanced technology in U.S. nursing, including the Da Vinci robotics program. I was in awe of the cutting-edge approaches in American healthcare, and in that moment, I knew I had to be part of it. It wasn’t just a dream—it became my mission.

Why I Chose Avant Healthcare Professionals:

I discovered Avant through a Google search, and their exceptional support system truly stood out. They guided me through the entire process, offering clear guidance and unwavering support. Their Cultural and Clinical Transitions program in Florida particularly impacted me as a first-generation immigrant. The team ensured I settled in smoothly, providing the resources and dedication I needed to succeed in my new life and career.

The Avant experience was life-changing. The transition program helped me refine my skills and form lifelong friendships. It was about more than just learning; it was about growing, connecting, and adjusting to life in the U.S. I began to realize that the journey was not just about my professional growth—it was about who I would become in this new chapter of my life.

Adjusting to my New Life in the USA:

The journey was not without its trials. As a first-generation immigrant, the road was often challenging. One of the most trying moments came during my second year in the U.S. when I lost my father. Travel restrictions and quarantine policies made it difficult to return to Taiwan, and my mother faced struggles back home. During this time, I was deeply grateful for the support from my unit team and nurse manager, who ensured I could return to Taiwan to be with my family when needed.

Though homesickness and burnout were constant companions, the support from people like Angie De Castro Enciso from Avant and the Employee Assistance Program helped me navigate those tough times. Overcoming these hardships has become one of the most fulfilling parts of my journey. It's a testament to the resilience and strength we all possess, even in the face of the most daunting challenges. I hope my story serves as a reminder that even through the most challenging times, there is growth and strength to be found.

Expanding My Nursing Experience:

As I continued my journey, I trained as a CVICU nurse, taking on a new role—caring for cardiovascular surgery patients. This experience reshaped my entire approach to nursing, particularly in terms of the critical importance of early patient mobilization.

In 2024, I proudly completed my 5,200-hour contract in Avant and secured a position at one of Dallas's top 20 nationally recognized hospitals. Today, I bring my ICU experience from Taiwan and my comprehensive U.S. experience to my work, and, and I’m eager to keep climbing the ladder in this field.

From Taiwan to Texas:

Texas has welcomed me with open arms, and I’ve found a vibrant community here. The Asian and Taiwanese groups in Dallas have made me feel right at home, and there’s always something exciting to do. It’s a big state with an even bigger heart. Finding a sense of belonging within this community has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my journey as a nurse in the U.S.

Living in the U.S. has opened up a world of opportunities I never imagined. Not only am I sharpening my nursing skills every day, especially now that I’m working at a university teaching hospital, but I’ve also embraced life outside of work. I’ve learned to ride horses and have plans to go hunting with a coworker. Life in the U.S. may not be for everyone, but for me, it’s been the perfect balance of career growth and adventure.

Advice for Aspiring US-RNs:

My advice for anyone considering a nursing career in the U.S. is to stay realistic and be patient with your dreams. The NCLEX is changing, and it’s important to do thorough research and seek guidance from experts, like those at Avant. If you’re an ESL speaker like I was, constantly working to improve your English skills is key. Most importantly, never forget that the effort you invest today will be the foundation of the success your future self will thank you for.
