Daisy Award: Lencer Ochieng

Lencer is originally from Kenya. In this blog, she shares her story about becoming a USRN with Avant Healthcare Professionals. She is also the recipient of the Daisy Award, which is a testament to her exemplary patient care. Congratulations, Lencer! Read more about her story below...

Where are you from? Have you always wanted to become a nurse?

As a Kenyan-trained BSN, RN, my journey into nursing was inspired by the dedicated care nurses who provided care to my late parents when they were ill. Witnessing their passion for what they do made me want to make a difference in the lives of others, too.

Why did you decide to become a US-RN? What convinced you to join Avant?

The decision to uproot my life in Kenya and pursue nursing in the USA was motivated by better opportunities I know are available in the land of milk and honey. With the unwavering support of my husband, I embarked on this life-changing journey, seizing the opportunity presented by Avant Healthcare Professionals. I have always wanted the best for my family.

I am grateful that I chose Avant Healthcare Professionals among many options I found. Countless testimonials from fellow registered nurses spoke volumes about Avant's commitment to supporting healthcare professionals transitioning to the USA.

How has your life changed since living and working in the US?

Relocating to a new country had its challenges. The anticipation, coupled with the rigorous preparation for the NCLEX exam, often left me overwhelmed. However, Avant came through with informative webinars, regular updates, and the guidance of dedicated transition specialists, eased the transition process, ensuring I felt at home in my new environment.

The professional growth I have experienced since stepping foot into the state-of-the-art healthcare facilities in the USA has been unparalleled. The advanced technology motivated me even more to provide excellent patient care. A couple of months ago, I was awarded the “Employee of the Month” recognition at my Med/Surg Department. Little did I know that the Daisy Award would come my way shortly.

Receiving the Daisy Award was an indescribable moment, it was truly heartwarming. The award serves as a reminder that the care I provide impacts the lives of my patients. It truly is a motivator to become more excellent in what I do.

Any advice to international nurses about coming to the US to pursue their American dream?

To aspiring US-RNs, I would say, nursing is rewarding. If you desire to become one, take steps, study, become a good nurse, and bring joy to your patients. It does require dedication to make a difference in people’s lives, even as simple as putting a smile on your patients’ faces when they need it the most.
