The Decision to Pursue Nursing
I decided to pursue nursing after seeing my dad in and out of the hospital. The care he received was amazing, and we always felt confident in the treatment he was getting. I wanted to give back in the same way. However, it wasn’t until my close and extended family helped me realize this dream that the decision truly sank in. They supported me in every way, giving me the strength to complete nursing school and appreciate the good I can do in my work.
The Decision to Move to the US
Leaving my family was not an easy decision. At some points, I even considered quitting. However, the thought of experiencing a new culture, meeting new people, and, most importantly, advancing my career gave me the extra push I needed. My family was incredibly supportive, even when the wait seemed endless.
Avant’s Role
One of my close friends told me about Avant, so I decided to do my own research—especially into the success stories—before sending my CV. The constant communication kept me on my toes, especially as I prepared for the NCLEX, but all the efforts were greatly appreciated and contributed to my success.
Challenges Faced
I had an idea of how stressful this journey would be, but upon arrival, I realized I wasn’t fully prepared for what awaited me. Adapting to a new routine, experiencing culture shock, and dealing with a language barrier took a toll on me. However, my family and friends were there for me, even though it was difficult.
Professional Growth
Investing in yourself leads to personal and professional growth. I started my BSN immediately after arriving, which has helped me better care for my patients. I’m incredibly proud of achieving this during one of the toughest periods in my life. Now, I’m looking forward to further advancing my career, particularly in mental health, to help healthcare workers navigate the transition periods in their careers and lives.
Impact on My Family
Aside from missing each other, especially during the holidays, I’ve encouraged my siblings that anything is possible. Becoming a US-RN has been a huge milestone, and I’m proud of my efforts and dedication. My family and friends share that pride with me.
What the DAISY Award Means
The DAISY Award is very prestigious. It feels wonderful to be appreciated, and when someone verbalizes that appreciation, it motivates me to keep going and strive to be better. The act of service can be challenging but also incredibly rewarding. When I receive a “thank you” from my patients, my heart melts every single time.
Advice to Aspiring Nurses
Follow your dreams and take a leap of faith. The decision to move is monumental, and the challenges you’ll face may test you, but the fact that you’re thinking about taking the first step means you’re strong and capable. Most importantly, nothing comes easy. The journey could physically and mentally drain you, but you’ve got to be patient and trust the process.
