Stelyus is originally from Brazil. In this blog, he shares his story about becoming a USRN with Avant Healthcare Professionals. Stelyus now has a successful career and life as a Permanent Resident.

Introduction and Background:

Becoming a nurse felt like a natural course because my family inspired me. My grandmother’s stories about her nursing career motivated me even more to make that decision. In Brazil, I was fortunate to study at one of the nation’s top nursing schools and to work in the government’s Oncology/Hematology and Emergency fields. When I chose to move to the U.S., I left behind a stable government position to join a private hospital—a move that might seem unconventional for a Brazilian nurse but one that I now know was the right choice.

The decision to move:

I wanted to find a path that allowed me to focus on just one job and avoid the research-oriented roles that come with a Master’s or Doctoral degree, mainly because I was not interested in research. I was drawn to being a bedside nurse in the U.S., where I could benefit from better nurse-to-patient ratios.

When I made my decision, little information was available about international nursing opportunities. Then, I came across a nurse’s journey through Avant Healthcare Professionals on YouTube, which inspired me to apply. Avant was the only organization in the U.S. that provided comprehensive process information, and I appreciated that clarity.

Challenges Faced:

I faced two main challenges: financial constraints and a language barrier. The difference between the Brazilian real and the American dollar made it difficult to manage living expenses and save for a new start. I had to be meticulous with my budget and sacrifice social activities to make this dream a reality.

My English proficiency was intermediate, but I needed to demonstrate advanced skills. Finding English classes in Brazil was challenging, as such certifications are not commonly pursued in nursing. Establishing a routine for English studies was difficult given my demanding career schedule, but I committed to it.

Professional Growth and Family Life:

My nursing experience in the U.S. presented a distinct set of challenges compared to what I encountered as an ER nurse in Brazil. The structured, rule-based environment here in the U.S. provides a predictable and secure work schedule. As a med/surg RN, my role has different aspects than those I faced previously.

On a personal level, moving to the U.S. has allowed me to find a better work-life balance, giving me time to be a husband, son, and friend—roles I didn’t have time for before. The irony is that I now have the time to connect with my loved ones in Brazil, even from afar.

My wife had to restart her career as well, and it was challenging to see her struggle with exams and adjustments. The support of having my wife and dog with me made the adaptation process easier, though it was difficult to witness her difficulties firsthand. Being able to stay in touch with family and friends through technology has been a positive aspect, even though I miss being physically present with them.

Receiving the Daisy Award:

Receiving the Daisy Award was a profound and unexpected honor. I didn’t know much about it until that day, and hearing the patient’s letter read aloud was deeply moving. This award reflects the impact that nursing can have on patients’ lives, and being recognized in front of my peers was a moment I will always cherish. Additionally, our Med/Surg floor receiving the Team Daisy Award this year highlights our collective commitment to providing excellent care.

Advice for Aspiring Nurses:

For those considering a nursing career in the U.S., ask yourself: Am I happy? Am I doing something I will be proud of in the future? Am I able to enjoy my career and my life? Don’t move to the U.S. solely for financial reasons; there are other ways to achieve financial stability.

The real motivation should be a genuine desire to provide quality patient care. Prepare for the emotional challenges of being away from home. Be prepared and prepare your family for the "saudade" (feeling of missing something) because this is the real challenge but remember that happiness is a state of mind. Nursing is a universal profession, and people are fundamentally the same wherever you are. Embrace your journey with authenticity and courage.

If you’ve read this far, you might be on the brink of your own journey. I once sought inspiration from others as well, and now I hope my story offers you hope and encouragement as you navigate your path.
