The demand for Home Health Registered Nurses is increasing in the U.S. Trends in insurance reimbursement and the growth of the U.S. population all point to the home setting as the new epicenter of healthcare delivery. With advanced technologies that are now available, the same levels of high-quality, high-tech care provided in a facility can be provided at home, at lower costs, and client satisfaction. More advances in-home care means that today and into the foreseeable future, nurses will have more opportunities to work, advance their skills, and pursue leadership careers in home health nursing.

For the right people, this is a fantastic opportunity. Below we will cover predictors of success, the benefits of home health nursing, and an exciting new opportunity with Avant Healthcare Professionals

Top 5 Predictors of Success as a Home Health Nurse

Home Health nursing has expanded in recent years. To be successful in this field requires a high level of clinical acumen and emotional intelligence. Let's review five common traits of effective Home Health nurses.

1. Empathy and Compassion

Whether it’s a skill or a gift—usually a combination of the two—being able to understand another person’s reality and using that empathy to provide compassionate care are vitally important in the personal space of the home, especially when the nurse-client relationship is long-term.

2. Competence

Families trust Home Health nurses to be educated, trained, and prepared with the skills to provide a broad range of routine and preventive care, to attentively recognize emergent issues before they become serious, and to provide proactive interventions, as necessary.

3. Flexibility

Every care environment is different. For Home Health nurses it is always the client’s and family’s intimate home base. To be successful, a Home Health nurse must be able to adapt their care approaches from home to home, client to client. Flexibility is key, and for the right person, it’s a fun challenge.

4. Professionalism

Boundaries are not as clearly defined in a home health setting as in other care settings. Home Health nurses must be trusted to act in the best interest of their clients and to always adhere to the standards of professional conduct while maintaining friendly, respectful relationships.

5. Integrity

The home health environment does not provide the same level of managerial oversight as an institutional setting, where clinical management is physically present. A Home Health nurse is trusted to always do the right thing in a reliable way, with an unwavering ethical and moral compass.

Nurses who work autonomously, use all their nursing knowledge and skills, get to know their patients, treat them holistically, and see their improvement can find great success in Home Health and work to be the best nursing professional they can be.

The Benefits of Home Health Nursing

Many healthcare professionals have shared the reasons they choose to go into the nursing profession. Two of the most common reasons are the ability to do meaningful work and the opportunities it provides both personally and professionally. The field of nursing is a vast one that offers many advantages

Flexible Schedule

An average caseload is 5-6 patients but this can vary depending on the type of patients. Home Health Nurses can schedule their own visits and route, so it can be easier to run an errand or pick the kids up from school.

Home Health Nursing is Growing

If you are a clinician looking for a new opportunity, home health is the perfect option. The growth of the U.S. population, new technology, and trends in insurance reimbursement all point to Home Health nursing as the wave of the future.

Become a Better Clinician

As a Home Health nurse, you are working independently. Typically, that means you are alone with your patient, which enables you to become resourceful when facing a challenge. Having this much autonomy in your clinical life leads to the development of stronger skills.

Home Health Fosters Relationships

When working in Home Health, you find yourself making a greater difference in the lives of your patient. With the amount of one-on-one time spent with your patient, you can’t help but develop a personal relationship with them. Essentially, you are almost a member of their family because of the connection you are making with them.

Helping Patients in the Comfort of Their Home

Whether caring for an elderly patient, helping someone recuperate after an injury, or managing a chronic illness, you are allowing them to do it in the most comfortable setting for them. Given the choice of a care setting, most people prefer to be at home when they are ill or injured. As the person responsible for allowing this to happen, you will sense their appreciation and gain personal satisfaction.
