September 25, 2020

As of October 1, 2020, the NCLEX-RN exam is changing. The first thing that's changing is the length of the exam. Initially, testers would sit for a maximum of 265 questions. The great news is it has changed to a maximum of 145 questions, with 15 of those questions being trial questions. Only 130 of those questions count towards a tester's score. The minimum number of questions remains at 75, of which sixty questions count towards a tester's score, and fifteen are trial questions. The length of the exam has changed to accommodate those question numbers. Testers will now sit for a 5-hour exam maximum instead of a 6-hour exam.

The other thing that has changed is that they have abolished the "run out of time" rule. Previously, if a tester didn't get to answer all questions but was there for the whole six hours, they were marked on a separate rule. Because they have reduced the number of questions in the exam, they have abolished that rule, and testers are now only marked on two rules.

The first rule is the "standard operating rule"; where a tester must obtain minimum competency with a 95% confidence interval. The second rule is the "run out of questions rule," which applies if a tester has answered all the questions, and the computer has not made up its mind, then the tester will be marked on that rule. This rule looks at the very last question a tester answered and gives a result based on that.

The last change is that testers must wear a mask at the test center and can only take their mask off when their photo is taken.
