Avant Healthcare Professionals, the premier staffing provider of internationally experienced nursing and allied health professionals, today announced that its vice president of clinical operations, Adam Kless, has released groundbreaking qualitative research titled “Resilience & Internationally Educated Nurses.” The study was presented at this year’s International Council of Nurses (ICN) and Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) ICN Congress conference in Montreal, Canada.

ICN Congress 2023, held at the renowned Palais des Congrès, drew participants from around the world to unite under the theme “Nurses Together: A Force for Global Health.” Partnering with the Canadian Nurses Association, the event provided a platform for innovative ideas and international collaboration.

Kless’ study goes beyond conventional boundaries, taking a close look at the complex interplay between culture and resilience within the nursing profession. By examining the experiences and responses of international nurses, the research challenges pre-existing Westernized conceptions of resilience.

In exploring the profound cultural variations that may impact the understanding and application of resilience within different cultural settings, particularly in U.S. practice, the study’s findings pose an important question: Is our understanding of resilience universal, or does it vary across diverse cultures and languages?

This research also opens new doors for nurturing an inclusive and resilient global healthcare system, helping ensure nurses from various cultural backgrounds are recognized and understood in their unique contexts.

“This is important work that will allow us to better understand the influence culture has on our Western concept of resilience,” shared Kless. “It scratches the surface of the interplay of the two to lead us to a better understanding of the culturally specific support that internationally educated nurses will need as they transition to U.S. nursing practice. This latest study acts as the springboard for deeper research on this subject.”
