Wellness, Wonder & Heart

Tucked in the heart of Nairobi, Kenya, Mogra Rescue Centre is more than a children’s home; it’s a sanctuary of hope. Home to over 600 vulnerable children, Mogra provides not only shelter, but access to education, healthcare, and the consistent love and support needed to build strong, independent, and fulfilling lives.

Since 2023, Avant Healthcare Professionals has proudly worked with Mogra to support its on-site clinic. Through donations of medical equipment and supplies and funding for clinical staff, we’ve helped expand access to essential healthcare, especially for children managing chronic health conditions. But our connection to Mogra is about more than healthcare; it’s about community.

A Carnival with a Cause

This year, we brought that spirit of care to life through the Healthy Lives Carnival, a vibrant, joy-filled day focused on wellness, learning, and fun.

We wanted to do more than hand out treats or host games. We wanted to teach children about the many dimensions of wellness in ways that felt fun, empowering, and full of heart.

The day was packed with interactive stations and hands-on activities:

• A bouncy castle and balloon art sparked laughter and movement
• Face painting gave a creative outlet
• An Explore Nursing Station invited children to listen to their heartbeats with stethoscopes
• A Hand Hygiene Station showed kids proper handwashing techniques from real nurses

And for older youth and staff, we collaborated with The QuickFix Learning Hub to offer Stop the Bleed Kenya training to teach lifesaving skills in emergency first aid

The impact went beyond the carnival stations.  It created space for teens to see themselves in new ways as future nurses, community leaders, or confident individuals capable of learning and leading.

An Experience That Inspires

Many teens who participated in the Stop the Bleed training left the carnival with a renewed interest in healthcare careers. These kinds of experiences often leave a lasting impression, and for some, they spark a lifelong passion.

Elias, an Avant Scholar and Avant nurse, captured the heart of the day:

“I’m simply here to do very simple work—make the kids smile, help them what they can learn from me, motivate them, because I’ve also grown up to see that people really helped me. I want to give the same back.”

And he did, alongside every other volunteer who brought joy, kindness, and a belief in a brighter future for every child.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team of 38 Avant volunteers, including Avant Scholars and Nurses. Their time, energy, and compassion made the day so special for the children.

For many volunteers, the day was just as meaningful for them as it was for the children. As one volunteer raves, “One of the things that motivates me to be here today is that at one point in my life, I also wanted some assistance, and I was helped by people whom I didn’t know. I wanted to come here as a new face, meet the small kids, and know what they encounter in their day-to-day life, and I tell you, they deserve the best!”

Continuing the Work

The Healthy Lives Carnival is just one example of what it means to support a community with intention and heart. It reflects Avant Healthcare Professionals’ commitment to improving access to education and healthcare in places that matter deeply to our nurses and global community.
