What is the DAISY Award?
Elizabeth Wren explores the history and story of the DAISY award. This award was created in honor of the care received by Patrick Barnes. If you are unfamiliar with his story, Patrick passed away at the age of 33 from an autoimmune disease called Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP). DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. However, his family was overwhelmed by the amount of care and compassion they received from the nurses who tended to Patrick during his time in the hospital. Thus, the family created the DAISY award to show their appreciation for the hospital workers. Since then, the tradition has lived on and many nurses can earn a DAISY award in their assigned facilities.
Avant's DAISY Partnership
Avant Healthcare Professionals has partnered with the DAISY Foundation since 2022. This means we, as a company, can also recognize our nurses on assignment for their hard work. Elizabeth currently serves on the committee of the DAISY Foundation and explains more about the process of nominees, voting, etc. Part of the role means going through multiple nurse stories, each one containing heartfelt experiences which makes it difficult for the committee to be selective on who should receive the award.

New Daisy Award Categories
Two new categories are available for nominations for 2024: Nurse Educator and Nurse Leader. This is an opportunity for nurses to be nominated and recognized for their work ethic as leaders and educators in the nursing industry. These two new categories were announced in January of 2024. Since then, Avant has recognized a nurse for the Educator category for their dedication, passion and extraordinary care.
