Meet Jaymark, an international nurse from the Philippines who received the Daisy Award at his U.S. facility. Below, Jaymark candidly shares his journey to becoming a USRN; the hardships he has overcome, and how his family inspires him to achieve his goals. 

My Journey to Becoming a USRN

Life in the Philippines was never easy. I was the eldest of four, and my father died when I was in college. I was forced to stop studying and continue our family business, which at the time, I had little knowledge of. After I supported my siblings to finish their degrees, I went back to school to study Nursing and graduated Cum Laude. I also had a baby back then.

The salary I earned was insufficient to meet my family's needs, and it was not even enough for me. I applied to work in the U.K. as a registered nurse, leaving my family behind. 

I initially wanted to become a doctor; however, I took the closest thing to become a doctor due to financial constraints. As a nurse, I still get to look after patients. It is a very fulfilling job, as you see people get better with your care, and they appreciate the little things that you do day in and day out. It melts my heart once I see them get better and go home to their families. It's one of the best feelings that you can experience. Still, I hope to pursue my ultimate dream of becoming a doctor one day.  

My USRN Process

I decided to become a USRN mainly for better compensation, but I also wanted to grow in my nursing career or another career that I may choose in the future.

Life for me has changed a lot since I started working abroad. Now, I can buy whatever I want while providing for my family back home, and I also have time to travel and visit other places. Still, sometimes, it could get complicated and lonely because my family is not with me. I get through because they are my WHY.  

I was surprised to get the Daisy Award early in my U.S. career. I dreamt of getting this award, knowing that it is one of the most prestigious awards you can get as a USRN. It makes me feel proud of myself and what I have accomplished. I want to share this award with all my family, friends, co-workers, and people who helped me get wherever I am right now.  

I have other dreams I want to accomplish. I want to be a CRNA and practice here in the U.S. Eventually, I want to become a U.S. Citizen, get a house of my own, share it with my family, and have everything we need and want. I dream of traveling the world and visiting places I have never been to. I dream of becoming a millionaire and extending help to deserving people.  

My Advice for Aspiring USRNs

To my fellow nurses, keep on working hard and never stop dreaming. You are only as good as you believe you are. Have faith and go for it! Nobody was successful that did not try a million times.
