Meet Jwan, a Registered Nurse from the Philippines who received the Daisy Award at her U.S. facility. Below, Jwan shares the difficulties and rewards of being a nurse, as well as her journey to becoming a USRN. 

My Journey to Becoming a USRN

Becoming a nurse was not my dream profession. When I entered college, nursing was an "in demand" course, so I ended up taking it. Later, I learned to appreciate the profession when working in the hospital and community setting. My passion and dedication for what I do grew each day as I helped people who struggled with their health.

I worked in Singapore for eleven years. I was content because I could come home to the Philippines often. I did not even think of pursuing my American Dream anymore. The day came when my husband encouraged me to think about it again as becoming a USRN would help me grow professionally. A friend of mine knew of Avant Healthcare Professionals.  

My USRN Process

I knew I needed a guide to pursue my American Dream because I found the process complex; thinking about the NCLEX, Immigration, and more, I would not do it all independently. I got my first Daisy Award nomination a month after joining my facility. I will never forget that patient who nominated me. It concerned him that I was quiet; he told my CNA it seemed like I knew nothing. However, after the shift ended, he said he spoke to my Charge Nurse to ensure that I would still be his nurse the following day. I had three nominations before I got the award. On my sixth month in the facility, I got the Daisy Award! It was overwhelming, and I knew it was not easy to get the award. I felt fulfilled when I read the feedback. It motivated me to stay optimistic despite the physical and mental challenges of the profession, especially in the current climate. 

My Advice for Aspiring USRNs

Being a nurse is a tough job, and you must commit and have a desire to help others because it will show how you work. It won't be easy every day, so you need to prepare yourself mentally and physically. You need to keep yourself grounded and be open-minded to take advantage of opportunities that will help cultivate your knowledge and skills. And finally, pray harder and ask for guidance from God in everything you do.  

I want to thank my husband for allowing me to blossom in my chosen field and encouraging me in every part of this journey. Thank you to my family, who loves and supports me endlessly. Thank you to my friends who prayed for my success and safety. Thank You, Lord Jesus Christ, for making all these things possible.
