Where Are They Now? Sunday Okotie, RN
December 13, 2022
In 2019, Sunday moved from Nigeria to Maine to advance his nursing career. Today, he is pursuing his Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and living his dreams with his family through the help of Avant Healthcare Professionals.
Why did you join Avant?
I am passionate about caring for the sick and get fulfilled seeing them happy and smiling with their families. I believed coming to the US after a decade of nursing experience to advance my career in a new environment wouldn’t be a bad idea. I got information about Avant Healthcare Professionals from a close friend who was also an Avant nurse preparing for his NCLEX. He explained how to join, and I applied that same week; here I am today in the United States by the grace of God.
How was your Avant experience?
The program was full of learning activities like weekly webinars, journalling, and a series of trips locally and internationally. During my first weeks in the US, while I underwent Avant’s Clinical and Cultural Transitions Program, I learned a lot about American culture and values. They provided me with resources to help me and my family successfully transition to our new life in the US. The support from Avant was tremendous.
Where were you placed and why did you convert to the hospital's full-time staff?
Avant placed me after my interview to work at a facility in Bangor, Maine, in the Cardiac Telemetry Unit. Our family decided to stay longer in Maine after my contract ended with Avant Healthcare Professionals. I converted to full-time staff in December 2021 and am still working with them.
How have you integrated with your community?
Community integration is a gradual process because I come from a different continent (not just a different country) with lots of diverse cultures, values, food, and weather. Despite the differences, I’m enjoying every moment in the States. Overall, I’m doing excellently.
Any advice to other nurses thinking about coming to the U.S. to pursue their American dream?
My candid advice to my fellow international nurses aspiring to become a USRN is that it is doable but requires time, energy, and commitment to your dream. I will say to be focused and stay connected to the right people who will help you achieve your goal. Avant enabled me to achieve my goal, and I’m glad I knew them at the right time.
I can confidently say that Avant Healthcare Professionals has what it takes to help you achieve your American dream. They have the required resources and support for your NCLEX preparation and successfully transitioning to your job in the United States. Lastly, trust in God and never underestimate His grace.
