Meet Ann, a Registered Nurse from Nigeria who after working in her home country for over 10 years, knew she needed a change in order to grow in her nursing career. Ann decided to explore nursing opportunities the U.S. had to offer and is now living her American Dream with her husband in New Hampshire. Below, Ann shares her journey to achieving her dream of becoming a USRN.

My Journey to Becoming a USRN

I had a pretty good life, a good job, my family around me, and was riding through the fun of daily living. I have always had an innate desire to be a healthcare professional. I recognized my passion for the first time when I spent a night at the hospital with my mum at a tender age. Witnessing how my mother was taken care of at the hospital that day inspired me to pursue nursing.

I worked in one of the biggest hospitals in Nigeria in the Emergency Room. It is a tertiary institution that sees and manages various cases. However, the hospital supplies and equipment are insufficient.

Having worked as a nurse in my country for over ten years, I felt that I needed a change. I wanted to explore more about the nursing field, and I know the U.S. had opportunities for me to thrive and grow in this profession.

My USRN Process

Coming to the U.S. is such a life-changing experience. I came from a warm country to now living in a much colder climate. Of course, there was the initial culture shock, but I had to adjust the most in my workplace. In the beginning, it felt like I was always on my toes, but I gained confidence soon enough. Most of my colleagues are amazing and ready to help in difficult situations, especially when my assignments are so heavy. It has been an exciting adventure for me, and I am grateful that I am living my dream

Someday, I hope to become a nurse practitioner majoring in AGACNP. I want to be known for my excellent nursing care and leadership in healthcare.
